Breast Reduction

Frequently, women with very large or pendulous breasts experience discomfort from bra strap skin irritation, the inconvenience of finding clothing that fits, restriction of strenuous physical activity as well as a variety of medical problems such as back and neck pain, hard to control skin rashes and even breathing problems. Teenagers especially, and even older women, are also frequently self-conscious about breast size. Reducing and reshaping the breast can alleviate most or all of these problems. In most cases, Breast Reduction isn’t performed until a woman’s breasts are fully developed. However, it may sometimes be done earlier if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort.
The procedure involves removal of excess breast tissue and tightening the breast skin making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body. Breast reduction is most frequently performed for physical relief rather than for cosmetic improvement.
The Procedure
Breast Reduction is a “same day” procedure that can take from 2 to 3 hours. It is performed in an ambulatory surgical facility. Nearly always performed under general anesthesia, you will be asleep throughout the entire process.
The most commonly used technique involves an anchor-shaped incision that circles the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Extra fat, skin and glandular tissue are removed and the nipple and areola re-positioned. The skin is then redraped around the areola. Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downward, and along the lower crease of the breast.
Recovery
You may feel tired or sore up to a week after your procedure and there will be some bruising and swelling. You will probably be able to return to work within a week or two but it will be slightly longer before you can resume strenuous physical activities. You may also experience breast sensitivity. Your scars will begin to fade after several months but will never fully disappear.
*As with any surgery, breast reduction may carry some risks along with the potential of side effects. These may vary by individual and will be fully discussed during your initial consultation with the Board Certified plastic surgeons at Advanced Concepts, located in Seattle, Washington.
